Pedro I, King of Portugal

  1. Born on April 8, 1320. Reigned 1357-1367. Son of Afonso IV of Portugal and his wife Beatriz of Castile and Molina.
  2. Famous for his doomed love story with Inês de Castro and her tragic death by order of Afonso IV. This has been the subject of many literary works through the ages by authors of many different nationalities.
  3. Became King of Portugal when he was "thirty-seven years, one month and eighteen days old". [Pedro, ch. 1: 2, 3] 
  4. Was famous for his zest in dispensing justice, which won him the nickname of 'the Just' or 'the Justicer', though he was also known as 'the Cruel', because he could take his justice to cruel extremes.
  5. Sent ten galleys to assist Pedro of Castile in the latter phase of the Battle of Barcelona. [Pedro, ch. 24]
  6. Sent 500 men to assist Pedro of Castile in the siege of Tarazona, during his protracted conflict with Pedro IV of Aragon. [Pedro, ch. 34: 39-46]
  7. Accepted an alliance with Enrique II of Castile, while the Castilian's brother was still alive and seeking the support of the Black Prince to recover the crown of Castile. [Pedro, ch. 41: 24-37]
