- Maria, the wife of Alfonso XI of Castile died in Portugal estranged from her husband who shunned her for his lover, Leonor de Guzmán. Maria's father was Afonso IV of Portugal.
- When her son Pedro became King of Castile he asked his uncle, Pedro of Portugal, and Maria's brother, to allow her body to be brought back to Castile (1357). Great preparations and exchange of letters of credence were made at the time.
