- (1334-1379) Illegitimate son of Alfonso IX of Castile and his lover Leonor de Guzmán.
- Married Juana Manuel de Villena y Nuñez de Lara (1350), from whom was born the future Juan I of Castile.
- Was made the first Count of Trastámara by his father, but in 1366 during a rebellion against his half-brother, Pedro of Castile, Enrique is acclaimed king. In 1369, he killed Pedro of Castile after the battle of Montiel.
- Before becoming king, Enrique Count of Trastámara spent several years in exile at the service of Jean II of France, fearing the hatred of his half-brother Pedro of Castile.

- Invaded Portugal in 1372, taking Almeida, Pinhel, Linhares, Celorico, and the city of Viseu. This opened a new wave of hostilities that became known in Portugal as the 2nd Guerra Fernandina. Hostilities were ended through the Treaty of Santarém signed in March 1373.
