Maria of Portugal, Queen of Castile

  1. (1313-1357) Estranged wife of Alfonso XI of Castile, mother of Pedro the Cruel of Castile. She was the daughter of Afonso IV of Portugal and Beatriz of Castile, and sister of Pedro the Just of Portugal.
  2. Shortly after Alfonso XI's death, Maria issued the order for the execution of Leonor Núñez de Guzmán, the king's former mistress. [Pedro, ch. 17: 78-81]
  3. Queen Maria died in Portugal. Horrified with the number of people her son, Pedro of Castile, had been killing out of revenge or suspicion, she cursed him and asked to join her father, Alfonso IV in Portugal [Pedro, ch. 16: 131-136].  She was buried in Évora, but later Pedro of Castile sent for her body to be buried in Seville [Pedro, ch. 2].
