Reposteiro-mor

  1. Keeper of the King's Wardrobe. [Pedro, ch. 13: 10, ch.32; Fernando, ch. 150; João2, ch. 1]
  2. Office which preceded that of 'camareiro-mor'. The officer was responsible for the 'repósito' or 'reposte' (the Wardrobe), which consisted of a range of valuable articles belonging to a king or a nobleman, i.e. valuable cloth articles, including uncut bales of cloth, silver items, dishes, silverware, etc. The earliest Reposteiro-mor identified by Santa Rosa Viterbo dates back to King Sancho I of Portugal, 1188. See: Santa Rosa Viterbo,  Elucidário das palavras, termos e frases que em Portugal antigamente se usaram e que hoje regularmente se ignoram, vol. 2, p. 190 (Lisbon: A. J. Fernandes Lopes, 1865).
