Louriga

Alias:
loriga

  1. Hauberk.
  2. A mail shirt having either long or short sleeves and extending to at least the mid-thigh.
  3. From the Latin 'lorica'. The term is frequently used to describe the mail hauberk in medieval documents.
  4. Hauberks usually had integral coifs, as it is also implied in the Crónica de D. Pedro, ch. 11, ll. 24, 25 stating that each vassal should keep in good condition his 'hauberk and respective coif'. The vassals in this passage might have worn additional pieces, such as a helmet or other body armour. Nevertheless, according to the basic requirement stipulated by King Pedro's law, it would make sense for the King to designate the hauberk as the most essential and mandatory piece of armour. (TC)
