Besteiro

  1. Crossbowman.
  2. Person, soldier or hunter whose weapon is a crossbow.
  3. The crossbowmen of the king were responsible for the sovereign's guard but could also serve as summary executioners when the occasion arose. This was common practice especially in Castile. Galé

  1. Galley.

Alcaide

  1. Governor (of castle). (SC, CW)
  2. The office of 'alcaide' or governor of a castle included military responsibilities, as he was responsible for its defense. It might also include civil administrative duties which could extend over a province, though not as a rule. Compare with Alcaide-mor. (CW)

 

Ordem do Hospital

  1. Order of the Knights Hospitaller (PK); group founded c. 1050 to provide care to the pilgrim to te Holy Land.
  2. Became a military order during the First Crusade after the conquest of Jerusalem in 1099.
  3. It had its headquarters in Rhodes from 1310 to 1523.

Ordem de Cristo

  1. Order of Christ; religious and military order founded by King Dinis with all the estates and prvileges of the Order of the Temple in Portugal.
  2. It was confirmed by the papal bull Ad ea ex-quibus by Pope John XXII in March 1319.
