Urban VI, Pope

  1. (1318-1389) Born Bartolomeo Prignano.
  2. Archbishop of Bari (1377-1378).
  3. Ruled as Pope from 1378 to 1389, a period of great unrest and instability in the Church, which led to the Great Western Schism (1378-1417), when another pope, Clement VII, was elected to rule from Avignon.
  4. Fernão Lopes denies that Urban VI refused to grant King João I of Portugal a dispensation regarding his celebacy vows, so that he could marry Philippa of Lancaster. King João had been a former Master of the Militry Order of Avis. [João2, ch. 123]
