Juan Gutiérrez, Bishop of Dax

  1. (?-1393) Famous for his commitment to the cause of Pedro of Castile in his struggle against his half-brother, Enrique of Trastámara, future Enrique II of Castile.
  2. When Pedro of Castile was killed by Enrique of Trastámara, at the end of the Battle of Montiel (1369), Juan Gutierrez joined John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, husband of Constanza of Castile, King Pedro's heir.
  3. Joan Gutiérrez became a faithful member of John of Gaunt and Constanza of Castile's court in London, as Castilian monarchs in exile. He often led international diplomatic missions on behalf of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster and pretender to the throne of Castile.
