Trancoso

  1. Town and castle in NE Portugal, in the region of Beira.
  2. The early castle dates from the period of the Reconquest in the tenth century. By then it consisted essentially of a defensive tower.
  3. During its early existence, the castle was in a border region often disputed by Portuguese, Leonese and the Moors, as the Chrsitian kingdoms expanded southwards. Eventually it became part of the netword of castles that formed an important line of defense against Castilian  invasion.
  4. In 1282 it was the scene of King Dinis of Portugal's marriage to Isabella of Aragon.
  5. King Dinis expanded its was and the number of towers, typically square, adding also the 'Porta del-Rei' (King's Gate) and the 'Porta do Prado' (the Meadow Gate).
