Toledo

  1. Medieval city in the center of  the kingdom of Castile.
  2. Capital of the province of Toledo and of the autonomous community of Castile-La Mancha in central modern Spain. It is situated some 50 miles South of Madrid.
  3. Major cultural center since its days under the Caliphate of Cordoba. Taken by Alfonso VI of Castile in 1085.
  4. Place where Pedro of Castille ordered the executions of twenty-two worthy local men and four knights for rebelling against the murder of the king's abandoned wife, Blanche of Bourbon, which they suspected to be imminent (1355). [Pedro, ch. 16: 113-125; ch. 17: 133-141]
