- Medieval city in the center of the kingdom of Castile.
- Capital of the province of Toledo and of the autonomous community of Castile-La Mancha in central modern Spain. It is situated some 50 miles South of Madrid.
- Major cultural center since its days under the Caliphate of Cordoba. Taken by Alfonso VI of Castile in 1085.
- Place where Pedro of Castille ordered the executions of twenty-two worthy local men and four knights for rebelling against the murder of the king's abandoned wife, Blanche of Bourbon, which they suspected to be imminent (1355). [Pedro, ch. 16: 113-125; ch. 17: 133-141]
