  1. Municipality in the modern autonomous community of Rioja in northeastern Spain, situated along the Camino de Compostela.
  2. The town was founded by St. Domingo de la Calzada, a hermit from nearby Burgos who improved the causeway, 'calzada' in Spanish, used by the pilgrims to the sactuary of St. James in Compostela. He built a bridge, a church, and a hospital with a hostel.
  3. In the 21st century, pilgrims to Compostela still walk this way, stop at the local hostel and visit the cathedral dedicated to the saint.
