- City in central coastal Portugal, situated at the mouth of the Tagus river, and capital of Portugal since King Dinis transferred the administration to this city.
- Main Port and business centre.
- Location of what eventually became one of the kingdom's treasury towers, the Torre Albarrã. King Pedro, following the advice of his treasurer, begins to deposit there the annual sum of 15,000 dobras from his surplus budget. [Pedro, ch. 12: 19, 73-75]
- Centre of support for the Master of Avis and of resistance to Castilian invasion as reflected during the great siege of Lisbon in 1384.
