Robert de Genève, Cardinal of Genève, Antipope Clement VII

  1. (1342-1394) Born in Genève, Switzerland.
  2. Bishop of Thérouanne, 1361, and of Cambrai in 1368.
  3. Elevated to Cardinal Priest of the Holy Twelve Apostles, 1371.
  4. Participated in the conclave that elected Pope Urban VI, in 1378.
  5. Shortly after, he was a leader of the movement protesting against the extreme and violent measures adopted by Urban VI. At the September 1378 conclave gathered at the cathedral of St. Peter, in Fondi, kingdom of Naples, Robert de Genève was elected by mainly French and Italian cardinals as Clement VII, thus becoming the first antipope of the Great Western Schism.
