Pedro [Martínez] de Luna, Cardinal of Luna

  1. (1328-1323) Born of a distinguished Aragonese noble family. Son of Juan Martínez de Luna and María Pérez de Gotor.
  2. Elevated to Cardinal-deacon of St. Mary of Cosmedín in 1375.
  3. Participated in the 1378 conclaves that elected Urban VI and the Antipope Clement VII.
  4. Proposed an end to the Great Schism, should he be elected pope, by abdicating and asking for the deposition of the Pope.
  5. At the coclave of 1394, Pero de Luna was elected, becoming Antipope Benedict XIII.
  6. He was deposed in 1409 by the Council of Pisa and in 1417 by the Council of Constance, but refuted both depositions.
