Lourenço Esteves de Azambuja

  1. (c. 1370-?) Chief Provincial Governor of Salvaterra, Portugal.
  2. Son of João Esteves de Azambuja, 'o Privado', the Councellor, (born c. 1315), and of his second wife Violante Lopes de Albergaria.
  3. Cousin of João Afonso Esteves de Azambuja, successively bishop of Silves, Porto, Coimbra, and eventually archbishop of Lisbon (1402-1415) and cardinal (1411-1415).
  4. Was present at the ceremony in which the letters of dispensation petitioned by King João I, approved by Urban VI before his death, but only later confirmed in writing by Boniface IX, were made public at Lisbon cathedral amongst the highest civil and religious dignitaries in Portugal (1390).
