- Third son of Edward III of England and his wife Philippa of Hainault.
- Married Elizabeth de Burgh (d.1363), daughter of William de Burgh, 3rd Earl of Ulster (d. 1332).
- In 1352, at the age of 14, when the marriage negotiated in his childhood came into effect, he became lord of all his wife's lands in Ireland.
- Becomes Chief Governor of Ireland in 1361, but returns to England in 1367.
- In 1368 he marries Violante, the daughter of Galeazzo Visconti, Lord of Pavia, but dies four months later.
