João I, King of Portugal

  1. Born on April 11, 1357; reigned 1385-1433. Son of King Pedro and Dona Teresa Lourenço, a Galician lady;  Master of the Order of Avis, acclaimed king in 1385.
  2. "She [Dona Teresa] gave birth to a son, Dom João, who was to become Master of the Order of Avis in Portugal and later the nation’s king, as you will hear in due course. Dom João was born in Lisbon on the eleventh day of April at three o’clock in the afternoon in the first year of King Pedro’s reign. The king ordered that in early childhood Dom João be reared by Lourenço Martins da Praça [...] Later, he entrusted his upbringing to Dom Nuno Freire de Andrade, Master of Chivalry of the Order of Christ."
