Edward [of Woodstock], Prince of Wales

  1. (1330-1376) Son of Edward III of England and Philippa of Hainault.
  2. Also known as the Black Prince, almost certainly on account of the color of his armor.
  3. Married Joan of Kent (1361), who gave birth to the future Richard II. Edward died in 1376, one year before his father. As a consequence, Richard II inherited the crown directly from his grandfather, Edward III.
  4. He was also Duke of Cornwall and Prince of Aquitaine.
  5. Edward, Prince of Wales, or more popularly the Black Prince, was one one the most distinguished knights and military leaders of his time, having become victorious at the battles of Crécy and Poitiers, which radically changed the warfare strategies of his day.
