- (1312-1377) Son of Edward II of England and Isabelle of France.
- Edward III's claim to the throne of France in 1336 initiated the longest conflict in European history, the Hundred Years War. Many kingdoms participated in the conflict, either as direct allies of the two main contenders, England and France, or in wars with other neighboring countries. In doing so, they called for either French or English assistance, as the case might be, and the conflict was thus fueled for many decades in different parts of Europe.
