Alias
- Also: Avinhom
- City in modern Southern France, capital of the region of Vaucluse.
- Famous on account of the Great Schism that divided the Catholic church. Residence of popes and anti-popes between 1309 and 1423.
- The city is also famous for its medieval bridge across the Rhône of which only four arches remain. The structure tended to become unstable when the river flooded, and after repeated efforts to rebuild it and subsequent collapses, was finally abandoned. This is the bridge in the French nursery rhyme "Sur le Pont d'Avignon/ On y danse, on y danse/ Sur le Pont d'Avignon/ On y danse tout en rond".
