- Nephew of Juan Núñez de Prado, Master of the Order of Calatrava (1322-1355). Nominated Master of Calatrava against Pedro I of Castile's orders.
- When his uncle was arrested by Pedro I of Castile and replaced by Diego Garcia de Padilla, brother of María de Padilla, the king's mistress, the brothers of the religious order of Calatrava met in Osuna, refused to accept the king's appointed master, and nominated Pedro Estebáñez Carpentero. Pedro Estebáñez went to Toro to join Queen Maria and her circle of lords, trusting that in the presence of the queen King Pedro would accept his appointment by his fellow Calatrava brothers.
