- Son of Thomas Holland, 1st Earl of Kent and Joan, 4th Countess of Kent, who later married Edward the Black Prince. This makes John Holland a half-brother of Richard II of England.
- Second husband of Elizabeth, daughter of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster.
- Constable of the Duke of Lancaster's army during his expedition to claim the crown of Castile, in July 1386.
