Tomar

  1. City on the margins of the Nabão River, in the region of Ribatejo.
  2. Headquarters of the Knights Templar in Portugal, with a castle and monastery founded by Gualdim Pais (1160), fourth grandmaster of the Order.
  3. In 1314, King Dinis of Portugal succeeded in transferring the estates belonging to the Order of the Knights Templar to the recently founded Order of Christ. In 1312 Pope Clement V had promulgated the dissolution of the Order under istrong pressure from the part of Philip IV of France, who had been persecuting the Templars since 1307 under the accusation of heresy.
