Lamego

  1. Important Portuguese medieval town where the Royal court convened and took important decisions, such as proclaiming Afonso Henriques as the first king of Portugal (1139).
  2. The town received several privilieges and charters from subsequent kings, namely from King Sancho I and King Dinis, who established an important market.
  3. The town benefited also from its situation on the route from central Iberia, through Guimarães and Braga on the pilgrim way to Santiago de Compostela.
  4. Its bishops were usually among the notables of the kingdom.
