- Important Portuguese medieval town where the Royal court convened and took important decisions, such as proclaiming Afonso Henriques as the first king of Portugal (1139).
- The town received several privilieges and charters from subsequent kings, namely from King Sancho I and King Dinis, who established an important market.
- The town benefited also from its situation on the route from central Iberia, through Guimarães and Braga on the pilgrim way to Santiago de Compostela.
- Its bishops were usually among the notables of the kingdom.
