- In medieval times it was a much disputed territory eventually integrated into the Kingdom of León by Alfonso VI (1072).
- Galicians and Portuguese spoke the same language and their nobility circulated quite freely between the two territories. Many aristocratic families shared branches in Galicia and in Portugal. It was not uncommon for Galicians and Portuguese to join forces against the kings of Castile.
- One of the jewels of Galician-Portuguese literature is a collection of secular poems preserved in several compilations known as "Cancioneiros".
