Arraiolos

  1. Portuguese town in Alentejo, Portugal, some ten miles north of Évora.
  2. The castle of Arraiolos was part of an important defensive nextwork of castles.
  3. In modern times, the town is famous for its needlework wollen rugs, a tradition probably dating from the sixteenth century, with designs reminiscent of Persian carpets.
