- Also: Avrantes
- Castle in central Portugal in the basin of the Tagus river, conquered from the Moors by King Afonso Henriques.
- It became a bastion of defense against the Moors and later against Castilian invasion.
- The castle was entrusted to the military Order of Santiago. Later on, the Portuguese branch gained autonomy from the headquarters of the order based in Uclés, Castile.
