  1. Castle in central Portugal in the basin of the Tagus river, conquered from the Moors by King Afonso Henriques.
  2. It became a bastion of defense against the Moors and later against Castilian invasion.
  3. The castle was entrusted to the military Order of Santiago. Later on, the Portuguese branch gained autonomy from the headquarters of the order based in Uclés, Castile.
