Vasco [Fernández de Toledo], Archbishop of Toledo

  1. Also known as Blas Fernández de Toledo.
  2. Son of Fernán Gómez de Toledo and Teresa Vázquez de Acuña.
  3. Castilian noble, whose father had been head chamberlain to Fernando IV of Castile. His paternal uncle was Gutiérre  Gómez de Toledo, Archbishop of Toledo (1310-1319).
  4. He had a long and prestigious career in Castile and in Portugal, after being exiled by Pedro of Castile. He was Bishop of Palencia (1343-1353), Archbishop of Toledo (1353-1362), Bishop of Coimbra and Apostolic Administrator (1363-1371), Bishop of Lisbon (1371) and Archbishop of Braga (1371-1372).
  5. Exiled by Pedro of Castile in 1360.  Fernão Lopes stresses that he was not allowed to take a single book because Vasco Fernández, Archbishop of Toledo, was a learned man with a great love for books. [Pedro, ch. 32: 21-23]
