Nuno Álvares Pereira

  1. (1360-1431) Illegitimate son of Álvaro Gonçalves Pereira, Prior of Crato, and Iria Gonçalves do Carvalhal. Great-grandson of Dom Gonçalo Pereira, Archbishop of Braga (1326-1349).
  2. Married the widow of Vasco Gonçalves Barroso, daughter of João Pires de Alvim and Branca Pires Coelho. They had three children but only their daughter Beatriz survived to adulthood.
  3. Nuno Álvares was the great hero of the dynastic crisis of 1383-1385, being a gifted leader and strateguist. He was the proverbial right man for the right moment and the right arm of the Master of Avis, future King João I, in the defense of Portugal against successive Castilian incursions led by Juan I of Castile.
