María de Padilla

  1. (c. 1334-1361) Lover of Pedro of Castile, for whom he abandoned Blanche of Bourbon. They had four offspring, including Constanza, future second wife of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, and mother of Catherine, who eventually married Enrique III of Castile. 
  2. Member of the lesser Castilian nobility.
  3. She was brought up in the house of Isabel Téllez de Meneses and her husband, the Portuguese nobleman João Afonso de Albuquerque, aide to Queen Maria, wife of Alfonso XI of Castile, and later great chancellor to her son, King Pedro. [Pedro, ch. 16: 59-62]
