- Juan Manuel was an influential man. His daughter from his second marriage, Constanza Manuel de Villena y Barcelona, married the future Pedro I of Portugal (1339); the daughter from his third marriage, Juana Manuel de Villena y Nuñez de Lara married Enrique Count of Trastámara (1350), the future Enrique II of Castile.
- Besides being an astute politician, Juan Manuel left his mark on Castilian literature by writing prose in the vernacular, which was unusual at the time. Most of his writings can be classified as 'mirrors for princes', including his masterpiece El Conde de Lucanor.
