John Devereux

  1. (?-1393) Baron Devereux, son of John Devereux of Bodenham, Herefordshire.
  2. Married Margaret, daughter of John de Vere, Earl of Oxford (1379), which may have been a contributing factor toward his rapid social rise.
  3. Distinguished knight and member of Bertrand du Guesclin's companies leading Enrique de Trastámara's march into Castile to wrest the crown from his half-brother (1366). However, when the Black Prince decided to support Pedro of Castile's faction, John Devereux was called to join the English contingent and ended up fighting against his initial companions in the Battle of Nájera (1367).
  4. Was appointed to many distinguished offices including: member of Richard II's royal council, constable of Leeds Castle, Kent (1378), captain of Calais (1380), constable of Dover castle, warden of the Cinque Ports, and knight of the Garter (1389).
