Maria Roussada

  1. Woman who had been raped, and who was given the nickname of 'roussada', meaning raped.
  2. Subsequently, she married the man who had raped her and they enjoyed a happy family life with several children. Nevertheless, when King Pedro of Portugal discovered why she had the nickname of 'Roussada', he ordered her husband to be executed in order to fulfill the law, applying the due punishment for the crime of rape, despite leaving the woman a widow and destroying her future.
