- Northwestern region of Portugal comprising the Atlantic basin of the Douro river and reaching as far North as the Minho river. It reached as far East as Vila Real and Montalegre, nowadays part of the region of Trás-os-Montes.
- The region included the cities of Guimarães, known as the cradle of Portugal, and of Braga, major religious center.
- In modern times it corresponds largely to the provinces of Minho and Douro Litoral.
