Leonor of Castile, "of the Lions"

  1. Illegitimate daughter of Enrique II of Castile and Leonor Álvarez.
  2. Fernão Lopes explains her nickname, "of the lions", because Pedro of Castile had put her in a cage with famished lions in order to take revenge on his half-brother, the girl's father. The lions, however, did not harm her and Pedro ordered her to be retrieved, but he kept her as hostage. [Pedro, ch. 49-60]
  3. Leonor was freed and returned to her father by the Portuguese João Afonso Telo, Count of Barcelos, when he was accompanying Pedro of Castile across Portugal on his way to Galicia, attempting to escape Enrique's reach. By then the girl was fourteen years old. [Pedro, ch. 39: 46-64]
