- River running along the southern side of Lisbon, offering good conditions for a fairly deep port in front of the city.
- The stretch of the river closest to Lisbon was the scene of many skirmishes between Portuguese and Castilians, especially during the four month siege of Lisbon by the King of Castile in 1384.
