Alias:
Çollorquia
Colorquia
Solorquia
- This is an old Arab term, meaning a fortification of a village built on elevated ground, or a part of such fortification.
- The term, spelled as 'Çollorquia', is mention in the Chronicle of King João I, part 1, referring to a gate in the castle of Monsaraz, Nevertheless, no trace of a gate in Monsaraz with this name is now known of, but it is the most likely original form of ‘Solorquia’, the unknown term used in the Portuguese text and most probably one of the many corrupted names to be found in it. [João1, ch. 143: 27]
- Adelino de Almeida Calado, however, citing Túlio Espanca (1978. Inventário artístico de Portugal 9, Vol. 1 9, Vol. I, p. 360) remarks that the door in question was already known as ‘Porta Colorquia’ in the 14th century and the spelling of ‘Çollorquia’ in the original text cannot be justified, corresponding to some corruption of the term. At present this door is known as ‘Porta Falsa’, Treason Gate in Portuguese. See: Calado, Adelino de Almeida, and Fernão Lopes. 1991.
