Criado

  1. Criado; retainer; gentleman-in-waiting (when associated to the household of a monarch or a lord).
  2. Criado; domestic servant.
  3. The medieval word refers to 'criação' or creatio, the upbringing of a child or youngster put under the authority of a person unrelated to him or her by blood. This originated a special bond of pseudo-kinship which could not be easily undone and marked the life of the 'criado' by obligations similar to family ties. In Lopes's chronicles the word is often used this way, especially in the case of the nobility. However, by the fifteenth century the semantic field of the word had evolved and it could already be applied also to salaried domestic service. (RCG)
